Approximately 5.2 km of existing firebreaks highlighted on the map are being maintained and upgraded to provide suitable, trafficable access for fire appliances. Works include track surface repairs and reshaping, with drainage and erosion control where required.
Forestry mulching
Targeted forestry mulching will treat approximately 0.5 ha around the electricity substation near Victor Road, in the south-eastern part of the reserve. This area is predominantly buckthorn. The works will mulch this woody weed growth to increase hazard seperation to the substation.
Follow-up weed control
Chemical weed control will follow the mechanical works to manage regrowth in the mulched area and along the firebreaks. Follow-up treatment is planned within the 2026-27 financial year.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) is planning to conduct a fuel reduction burn between Old Northam Road and Thornwick Crescent, Chidlow.
Proposed timing: September to October 2026. The exact date will depend on suitable weather and operational conditions.
Planned burning reduces natural fuel loads and helps lower the risk posed by bushfires. The burn will be conducted by DFES staff with support from Shire of Mundaring Fire Control Officers and local volunteer brigades.
Smoke may be visible in surrounding areas during and after the burn. The site may continue to smoulder for several days and will be monitored following the burn.

- Between Horace Street and the creek line, non-native Tasmanian Blue Gum trees will be removed, including their stumps. These trees produce and shed large amounts of leaves, bark and other debris, creating a substantial layer of combustible material beneath them.
