A Healthier, Happier Mundaring – Draft Local Public Health Strategy 2026–2031

FAQ

The Shire of Mundaring's Local Public Health Strategy 2026–2031 provides a roadmap for protecting, promoting and improving the health and wellbeing of our community over the next five years.

The Strategy has been developed in accordance with the Public Health Act 2016 (WA) and aligns with the WA State Public Health Plan 2025–2030. It identifies the public health priorities that matter most to our community and outlines how the Shire will contribute to positive health outcomes through planning, environmental health, community services, partnerships, advocacy and place-based initiatives.

In late 2025, more than 1,100 community and stakeholder interactions helped shape the development of the draft Strategy. We are now seeking feedback to ensure we have accurately captured the health and wellbeing priorities of our community before the Strategy is finalised.

Your feedback will help us understand:

  • Whether the identified priorities reflect community needs and aspirations.
  • Whether the proposed focus areas are appropriate.
  • If there are any important issues, opportunities or gaps that should be considered.
  • Whether the document is clear and easy to understand.

The Strategy is structured around seven key public health priorities:

  • Access, Equity and Inclusion
  • Disease and Injury
  • Education and Awareness
  • Environment, Water and Waste
  • Health and Health Services
  • Mental Wellbeing
  • Risky Behaviours

These priorities are based on local health data, community feedback and alignment with State Government public health priorities.

The Shire does not provide hospitals, medical centres or specialised health services. Instead, the Shire's role is primarily preventative and enabling.

The Shire contributes to public health by:

  • Creating safe, accessible and healthy places.
  • Managing environmental health risks.
  • Supporting community connection and wellbeing.
  • Providing facilities, programs and services that encourage healthy lifestyles.
  • Working with health providers, community organisations and government agencies.

Advocating for improved services, infrastructure and resources for the community.

Anyone who lives, works, visits or has an interest in the Shire of Mundaring is encouraged to provide feedback.

We welcome input from:

  • Residents
  • Community groups and organisations
  • Health professionals and service providers
  • Businesses
  • Young people
  • Seniors
  • Carers
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members
  • People with disability
  • Other interested stakeholders

All feedback received during the consultation period will be reviewed and considered before the Strategy is finalised.

Feedback will help inform any amendments to the Strategy and ensure it reflects community priorities, local health needs and the Shire's role in supporting a healthy, resilient and connected community.

Following the consultation period, feedback will be reviewed and incorporated where appropriate into the final Strategy.

The final Local Public Health Strategy 2026–2031 will then be presented to Council for consideration and adoption. Once adopted, it will be made available on the Shire's website.

The Strategy will guide Council decision-making, service planning, advocacy and partnerships over the next five years.

Implementation will be supported through the Shire's broader planning and reporting framework, including an internal action plan. Progress will be reviewed regularly to ensure the Strategy remains relevant and responsive to emerging community needs and public health challenges.

Updates about the project and consultation outcomes will be shared through the Shire's website and engagement platform. Following adoption, the final Strategy and information about its implementation will be publicly available.

Public health is about more than hospitals and healthcare services. It includes the physical, mental, social and environmental factors that influence wellbeing, such as access to services, healthy lifestyles, safe communities, social connection, environmental quality and emergency preparedness. The Strategy takes a broad view of health and focuses on creating the conditions that help people live healthy, connected and fulfilling lives.
